Need drivers for dell inspiron 14 3442 on ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Asked by Carlos

Hi, I'm Carlos, my first tongue is spanish and I know too little of programming, computers and informatics, so I apologize about the incoherences and errors that might I commit.

I bought this new laptop (dell insp. 14 3442) just a few weeks ago but I turned it on for the first time on wednesday 17th, june (this week). Of course this laptop brought ubuntu as the OS from factory, in fact that's the reason I chose this computer. As i finished the initial start of ubuntu, it asked for an upgrade to 14.04 version (i think it was the 12 version initially) so i decided to upgrade using the upgrading tool issued by the system. It began downloading all the files it needed to upgrade and then it began to install them. As the installation progress, at some point it froze, I don't know exactly where or why, it just happened suddenly.

I left the computer for about two or three hours, hoping that it could solve-it-self and "un-freeze" and continue the installation but, in spite of the waiting, it remained frozen. The computer was hot, so after these 2-3 hours I decided to turn it off for it doesn't "burn" any piece of hardware (it has happened to me in the past with an hp laptop, it heated so much that the motherboard broke). When the laptop cool down I turned it on again to see what was the state of it and seemed normal, at least until the "starting screen" (when the OS asks for the password to log in). After I wrote the password and try to log in, the screen went black and then showed numbers for less than a second and came back to "starting screen".

When I saw this, obviously I assumed that the only thing that was installed after the "upgrading" was this "starting screen". As I assumed this, I downloaded directly Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Tahr and installed it on the laptop via usb. When the installation was complete I noticed that the computer couldn't connect to wifi, that I couldn't control sound volume or screen luminosity and that even the mousepad were malfunctioning (and I think that obviously almost everything in the computer is not working, I mean if the "wireless connections card" is not working, probably the graphics and sound card aren't working too, etc.).

I spent a lot of hours searching for support from dell or even canonical but I couldn't find. I don't know what else to do because I really need the computer, I use it for working and studying so I need it functional as soon as possible. On the internet I only found support from Dell for windows, and I DON'T want to use windows, I just want ubuntu. And as I didn't find support from anybody i've decided to write to you, to beg you for help. I really imagine that maybe is possible to buy a solution for my situation. So please, please help me to get the drivers/controllers or with some orientation about what to do.

Withhout anything else to add and really hopping that you can help me i send you my best regards.

Carlos H.

Sorry, that's what I did; I connected the ethernet cable (because wifi didn't work) and rebooted the system and still has no drivers/controllers.

There is a support forum on the dell pages for other OSes than Windows
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/3525

What wireless chip is there in your system?
Please you use https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure to provide information about your WLAN device.

(i'm sorry for my english is not a my native language) i was exactly equal yesterday, I was installing ubuntu 14.04 and frozen, but
I use use the dell recovery to return to ubuntu 12.04, you should try with that

(the recovery of dell is opened by pressing the F8 key as the system starts, if not f8 test with the other f until it opens)
