When you last unplugged it from a system did you use the safe remove feature before physically unplugging the device?

When last unplugged, the safe remove feature was not used before physically unplugging the device.

Plug the device into a Windows PC and let the system detect your device. Then in the system tray, use the safe remove feature and wait until you are told you can unplug.

Jam it into the Ubuntu system. Is it OK?

i did as told--used the safe remove feature in windows and after the icon went away, rebooted the system.

When ubuntu started and i was logged in, then connected the usb of the phone to the laptop. But except for a vibrate effect in the mobile on connecting it to the laptop, only a usb connection window popped up on the mobile and nothing happenned at the laptop screen. (same as earlier --unlike when my 2 other mobiles --a samsung s6 and a redmi note 4g--are connected to the laptop--and nautilus immediately starts up showing the smartphone)

adb devices --list of devices attached shows
???????????? no permissions

in the terminal. The MTP option if enabled in the usb connect window on the phone gives the above result to the adb devices command (in the laptop )but if the camera(PTP) option is enabled in the smartphone, a nautilus window opens automatically(showing 2 folders--DCIM and Pictures) and the adb devices command in the terminal shows

This might be caused by bug #1314556 "Unable to mount Android MTP device"

If you switch your phone to PTP, does it work as desired? In that case you at least have a workaround.

Yes it works in that I am able to see the images /photos/videos which are in those 2 folders (DCIM and Pictures). By the way I don't know about PTP or MTP or ADB. These are terms I saw on the screen and while googling. Maybe MTP was enabled or configured when I had to get the Redmi Note 4G detected last time by following instructions about problem solving it via googling on the net. After that, Ubuntu 14.04 was able to detect files/folders on the samsung S6 easily and i thought it would be able to work with the Lenovo a7000 but that did not happen.
Since there is no button to submit this answer and the only button available is "this solved my problem" I am clicking on it but my problem is still unresolved and the A7000 is not automatically detected by Ubuntu 14.04

Lenovo a7000 not detected by ubuntu 14.04 still. PTP is enabled automatically. Hence the 2 folders-DCIM and Pictures are accessible. Or I should say the other folders of the file system are not detected. The bug is unresolved

ok problem resolved. The phone has a "usb connected" popup window which has options for connecting it as a PTP device or a MTP device. Enabling a particular option enables the same protocol and one is able to browse the filesystem.
