Does Ubuntu 14.04 LTS desktop has the Ubuntu Studio?

Asked by Anthony

Hi,hate to bother.
id like to stop using windows, and since i use my daw and sometimes internet browser, id like to have something a little bit more optimized for recording.
i don't think it would be smart to burn my own disk, Ha! id like to buy it
Does the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Desktop http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=1146 has the Ubuntu Studio OS? Can i buy the disk, try it out, and if i like it to install it on my computer? Is it going to be something hard? When trying the Ubuntu Studio is the laptop going to be slower since there is windows installed on the background (as i said, before installing it, id like to try it)
Thanks.
All the best, beyond imaginable.

EBay users sell CDs with the Ubuntu install ISO on.

If you want to install the OS then it will run like the live desktop, just faster.

You can dual boot with Windows and have both OSes installed. It will not slow Windows down.

Thanks,but... its my fault that i don't understand.
1. what is live desktop? running the OS without installing it?
2. i don't care about the OS. I need it optimized for one purpose and i chose Ubuntu. So i dont really care what happens to the windows 8 OS.I care about how Ubuntu will perform, not windows.

Thanks for you reply! i appreciate it.

So i assume the disk they are selling here
http://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=1146
does not have the Ubuntu Studio OS ?

there is one more thing, there are users that sell ubuntu studio, and that's fantastic and everything.but if i install lets say... 12.0, will it update to the new one? Because if it will, im simply going to get it from ebay and let it install.

You can update from LTS release to LTS release. So the release last year (14.04 version) can upgrade directly to 16.04 which is released next year. Alternatively you can upgrade through the releases one by one but this will take a lot of data. As a new user I'd recommend that you stick to the LTS releases.

The Ubuntu OS can be tested off the CD and will run in RAM. This is also a useful tool for data recovery (you would be surprised how many idiots don't backup their "important" data.

Changes will be lost on reboot unless you run it from USB with a persistent data store. Tools that put Ubuntu onto flash storage will offer to make this for you.

You can add the Ubuntu studio metapackages and it will install all you need from the repositories.

Installing Ubuntu in a dual boot will not slow down Ubuntu

If Ubuntu Studio runs a little bit faster than the fancy without a reason windows 8, im not going to keep the windows, i barely have 320gb space and really need it.

Just a quick question tho...

"The Ubuntu OS can be tested off the CD and will run in RAM. This is also a useful tool for data recovery (you would be surprised how many idiots don't backup their "important" data."

Im not going to do anything important on the Ubuntu, im simply going to a daw and internet browser, but meanwhile, id probably have something going on, on windows, should i save everything before trying ubuntu? And one more thing, im pretty sure its logical and all, but i need to know. After installing the Ubuntu, what happens to all my files? i mean... im pretty sure they are not going to be deleted, but is there anything that i have to keep an eye or try to save it somewhere else? Right now im browsing ebay for this OS, they mainly sell the 14.04 not the 15.04 one,but im going to update it once i connect it to the internet.

Yes, you are about to make a massive change to your OS so a last full backup is wise.

Resize your ntfs in Windows then install to the freed space when you boot to the install media.

Ubuntu can read and write NTFS but windows cannot read or write to ext4 despite the definitions of the data being freely available

You need not buy a DVD from the canonical store, you can download the installation kit for free from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/14.04.2/release/

Use the instructions in http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop#context-footer to create a DVD on your own, or create a bootable USB stick for testing the system and/or installing.

Okay,so this is something easier than the thing i saw earlier. "a page starting with Verifying the ISO integrity" and i really didn't want to do it. So this looks way better, i am going to do it as soon as i can. Thanks! how can i delete this thread by the way ?

Why do you not want to check the integrity of data you are going to use to install an OS... it takes seconds and is free.... why is this something you don't want to do??????

Makes absolutely no sense at all.

Well, i wanted to do it in the easiest way possible. But there was "If you need help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide." link to that page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto and i assumed that is the same as USB stick.
Can you please tell me how to delete this thread? please ^^

Yes, you download the ISO and test it, then use a tool like unetbootin to put the file on to the USB.

There is no provision in Launchpad to delete threads from the question/answer area. Just set it to "solved" (you already have done that), and leave it alone. Sooner or later it will be buried in the list of solved questions that no one will ever look at it again.

And just in case that someone has a similar problem, maybe that person will be happy to find that document.
