Window manager locking ---

Asked by Andrew on 2008-03-11

System was working fine yesterday, today ...

Any of the following actions cause the whole system to freeze, so that the only recovery is a hard reboot:
* After opening 4 or 5 windows,
* Opening two windows and switching between windows a total of 2 or 3 times
* Opening the file browser and moving 3 or 4 directories

Any ideas how to fix?

No key stroke combination works (so http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#What_to_do_if_Ubuntu_freezes is of no use). Mouse is still live, and on a couple of functions I can "right click" and get a popup, but the applications/places/system etc menus are frozen.

Also within an application there appears to be no problem - so I can change tabs within firefox as much as I like without causing a problem.

Other folks are reporting similar - see Questions #26422 #25485 and maybe #25572 although I don't have compiz enabled (as far as I know).

Can you help with this problem?
