installing yahoo onto ubuntu

Asked by Russell

I downloaded the yahoo messenger for linux (deb) and now it wont install. i keep getting the error message; Dependency not satisfiable: libgdk-pixbuf2. i also am not sure what; Log in as root means because it (the installer)had instructions to type in there; dpkg-iymessenger_1.0.4_1_i386.deb so it will install the application. then i was supposed to;Run/usr/bin/ymessenger from x window to launch application. is any of this right or do i need to keep looking for a alternative to getting voice/sound in the chat rooms?

oh i also noticed on another trip back to the original page that the (.deb) package client was using a un-GNOMEified version of GtkHTML 0.8 which is under the LGPL.

Hi,
Everything in Linux/Ubuntu has permissions which is split up into users, groups, or everyone else.
Your system files are protected from being edited by regular users to help protect your system.
In order to edit them, you must give yourself "root" (administrator) privileges.
You can give yourself temporary root permission by typing "sudo" before a command.
After you type the command, you must authenticate yourself by typing in your password.
I hope that clears some of the stuff up.

The reason you are not given root privileges to your computer by default is a security feature. You don't want everything on your computer to be given the ability to mess around with core components of your system.

All packages that are installed from the repository (using Synaptic or apt-get) have their dependencies already fetched and installed also. Installing from a .deb file that you downloaded does not have this advantage.

You can usually find the package searching with Google. I found the libgdk-pixbuf2 pacakge here:
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/oldlibs/libgdk-pixbuf2

I have heard that yahoo messenger for Linux is old and outdated and I would recommend gaim. However, if you insist on having voice capability, this is how you have to do it. Currently there is no support for voice/video in gaim, but this should change in the future, as they are working on implementing it.

I hope this helps!
