Which Kernel for Centrino? & How?!

Asked by FatFox

I have a Dell D400 laptop, with an Intel Pentium M processor (badged as 'centrino' chipset)

I've been running Ubuntu without problems since Dapper, and I'm on the beta of Hardy (again, no problems aside from Firefox 3's bizarre and random treatment of 'right click' mouse behavior, but that's another issue.)

I've got the basic 386 kernel, and I'd like to use the 686 kernel (as I'm told it 'may' be faster)

I'm assuming the 686 is the right kernel?

In any event, there's clearly been some kernel re-naming of late, and I'm just a bit worried about trying to install a new kernel.

I'm also assuming that this can be done via synaptics, although there seems to have been some merging of the old 686 and the 686-smp, and frankly I'm a bit confused.

Summary -

I want the 'right' kernel, and I need to know how to go about it !!

(this seems a bit out of date - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=85917

Any & all help greatly appreciated

Hello,

The right kernel for you is "generic" one, on hardy it's currently : linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic

apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic will install it for you

Thanks,

Installed & updated, running fine.

Have to say, not noticeably faster, but nice to know I'm now on the 'right' kernel.

I understand why the default kernel is the -386, but the documentation for changing it is a little light.

Thanks again.
