Ubuntu malfunctioning due to crash during update

Asked by bobacajana

I've just updated to Ubuntu 14.04 but, during the installation part of the update process, due to a power cut, it got interrupted. Afterwards, it was not loading. That is now solved and Ubuntu is leading normally, but as soon as it goes to the desktop screen, all I get is a blue screen and notices of errors that I always report. the mouse doesn't always work, so relying mostly on the keyboard. How can I solve the errors? I can't open the download centre...

Drop to TTY1 and you can use:

sudo apt-get -f install

To continue the update. If power is an issue then a cheap UPS will help.

It doesn't work, because caps lock appears to be blocked on and some
letters aren't working. Therefore, I can't enter my login our even the
code, for that matter.

Power isn't a problem, this was a one time issue.

The "no talloc..." message is not very relevant, but the "0 packages updated, ... and 387 not updated." is important.

This shows that your system is not fully updated to the current package versions.

Try again: log in in the virtual console and issue the commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

The second command will most probably download some package files (If they are not yet downloaded) and will then try to install them. This will take a while and will produce several pages of output.

When that ends or stops, please try identifying the most important error messages on the last page and tell us about them, and tell us the contents of the last line shown on screen.

First same "no talloc" message as before and error: unknown option --audt

The second option, created absolutely nothing, just another open command
line.

That message (packages are missing control file) shows just an inconsistency but not a problem.

I conclude that your package management is in a consistent state, and I do not see anything that would prevent updating the packages.

If you execute the command

sudo apt-get update

What do you see?
Success messages like "Hit http://archive.ubuntu.com trusty Release.gpg"
or error messages like "W: Failed to fetch ... Cannot initiate the connection to archive.ubuntu.com"
or anything else?

Do you have the possibility to connect your system to the router with a LAN cable?

I'd go for a clean install of Trusty. You can restore your user data from your backups.

It really seems that a new installation of the operating system might be the most reasonable solution.
If you have data on the system that you want to keep, you should boot into an Ubuntu installation kit (either on DVD or on a bootable USB stick) in the "try Ubuntu without installing" mode, and you should be able to access the data on the hard disk for copying them to an external backup device.

Problem solved!

Managed to find an old version of Ubuntu the system had kept and that one
was online. So, ran the command on the terminal and everything updated and
is more fully functional.

Thank you so much for your help!
