Lenovo Edge E330 Wifi is disabled by hardware swtich

Asked by Filip

I have Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E330. I run on Ubuntu 14.04. Laptop was connected to the Wifi and was on AC without battery. When I put battery in, unplugged AC and opened laptop, my wifi stopped working. It says: Wifi is disabled by hardware switch. The trouble is that this model does not have any hardware switch on its body. I have tried many things:
- Loaded default settings in BIOS
- reinstall Ubuntu completely
- Searched in ubuntu forums

Thank You for help

There might be a Fn-Fx combination to enable/disable the WLAN device.
Can you try to locate a network/Wlan icon on one of the F1-F12 keys?

Please provide the output as stated in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessAskAtLaunchpad
but in step 3 do not create a new question, but paste everything as a response into this one that you have already created.

Can you reverse what you did before this started? Can you close the lid, connect AC power and remove battery and open lid to have wifi enabled? From what I have read, the wifi states are stored in NVRAM and the hard block had to have been triggered by BIOS.

I don't imagine you have Windows installed as a dual boot

You should file a bug report. I don't think there is any reason not to disable hard blocks on any laptop without a switch. The kernel developers were able to do it with the newer Lenovo's like the Yoga series

Shutdown OS
Remove battery
Unplug from main
Hold power button for ten seconds
Reinsert battery and connect to mains

I have already reported bug at this forum.
Removing battery and AC and holding power button doesn't solve problem, even holding it for more than 30sec doesn't work as I have read on other forums... Wifi is still hardware disabled by hardware switch. :(

Is there any setting in BIOS that refers to WLAN?
Is there a Fn-Fx combination that should enable/disable WLAN? If yes, try pressing that combination early during the boot process. Maybe that helps.

What is the output of
rfkill list

further up it once told
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
  Soft blocked: yes
  Hard blocked: yes

so apparently the WLAN was disabled twice!

In BIOS is LAN enabled and WLAN is turned on. Pressing keyboard button hasn't change it

What is the current output of lsmod ?

Which key combination is marked as wlan on/off? You might additionally press the Alt key (instead of Fn-F2 try Alt-Fn-F2).

Revision history for this message
Filip (filip-hendrichovsky) said :

None of the combinations works. WLAN is with F9. To turn on/off the wifi there is no combination, but to press F9 is the combinationn Fn+F9.

Ok.

1. acer_wmi is not loaded any more (makes trouble on some non-acer systems)

2. It seems that the Fn- logic is really the other way round as with most other manufacturers.
Try Alt-F9 (or Alt-Wlan key)

If this does not help, try rebooting and hit the F9 key several times during booting.

The trouble is, when I reset the BIOS to default, I can not boot ubuntu which is the only one OS. Than I need to use boot repair from liveUbuntu to fix it but it did not work last time... I am going to try update BIOS and will let u know.

I have solved it!!! ... I installed Windows7 and all drivers. After reboot to Windows I pressed hot key button for on/off WLAN. I was able to turn off the AirPlane mode. So now, in Ubuntu I wifi works but it does not work on Windows. Now I will keep dual booting for Ubuntu and Win just in case that something will go wrong again.
