Asked by bobacajana

Ubuntu was updating to new version. Half way during installation, power got cut off, shutting the system off. Now, Ubuntu won't start not even the previous versions and not even in recovery mode.

Use a chroot from LiveCD. OmgUbuntu has a guide called "sticking it to Grub" you can then run:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo update-grub

Then exit the chroot and reboot to your installed OS. If power is an issue then a cheap UPS will help when the power cuts out.

I'm sorry, I can't do it.

I have a CD with the latest Ubuntu, but can't get the initial installation
screen to display...
Can you help me? I really don't know what to do.
I have widows vista in a different partition.

If you try rebooting in recovery mode, what do you see?
Do you get the grub menu?

Can you reboot into recovery mode and select "root command prompt"?

If you execute the command

lsb_release -crid

what Ubuntu release number is shown?

And if you try a normal boot, what happens? How far does the boot process go, what do you see on screen?

When I do the normal status I just see the Ubuntu loading symbol with the
give circles lighting up as it loads, and when it gets to where normally I
would get the first Ubuntu screen, everything goes black. Just a black
frozen screen that won't even restart.

When you boot normally (until you have the black screen), try pressing ctrl-alt-F1
Do you get a virtual console screen with a "login:" prompt or does everything stay black as before?

device sr0 usually is the CD/DVD device, so this does not make sense when you boot from the hard disk.

If you switch to the virtual console (ctrl-alt-F1) and you get the "login:" prompt - please enter your username (which was defined at installation time), press enter, and when you get a prompt for the password, enter the password (you will not see anything when typing the password).

Can you log in this way?

Are you sure about your user name? It is most probably only lowercase characters.

ok, then stop for the time being.

You can find out the username (and you can set a new password) when rebooting into recovery mode - root command prompt

see http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

"ls /home" will shows the home directories, and they usually are named identical to the user names.
