Ubuntu 15.04 doesn't shutdown

Asked by Pablo

I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 and now my Samsung laptop doesn't shut down. I hit shutdown, the shutdown process does its thing until the screen goes blank, but the laptop remains powered on (the little lights at the front of the laptop remain on), To shut it off I use Alt-Ctl-PrntScrn+reisub. It doesn't happen always, but often, though I can't identify a pattern. I

Background is that I was running 14.04 and I began to have difficulty with shutdown. I would hit the shutdown button and nothing would happen. So I used the terminal sudo poweroff, I decided to upgrade to 15.04, thinking that would solve the problem, but as you see, it got worse.

Thanks for your help.

Did you upgrade to 14.10 in between or did you wipe 14.04 off and do a clean install of 15.04 from CD / USB?

Thanks

What model Samsung? Samsung make hundreds of different laptops. If you are unsure then if you run:

sudo dmidecode -t 1

And post the output then it will tell us.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply.
1. I upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 to 15.04 using the update manager. I did it all in one sitting.

2. This is the information on my laptop:

# dmidecode 2.12
SMBIOS 2.7 present.

Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 27 bytes
System Information
 Manufacturer: SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD.
 Product Name: 530U3C/530U4C
 Version: 0.1
 Serial Number: HTUS91DC500150
 UUID: 271D6440-1DD2-11B2-8000-FCEEBD098DF7
 Wake-up Type: Power Switch
 SKU Number: System SKUNumber
 Family: ChiefRiver System

3. To clarify my original description of the problem, when I hit the power switch and it goes through the shutdown process, I had stated above that the screen goes blank. More precisely, it goes dark as if it were shut down, but it isn't.

If you run:

sudo shutdown -h now

Does it shutdown OK?

Yes, it shut down fine.

A question: Is that the preferred command for shutting down rather than sudo poweroff?

as far as I know "poweroff" is fully equivalent to "shutdown -h"
