No Sound In Hardy

I installed Hardy Heron on my Dell Dimension 2400 and now I have no sound. My Volume Control applet in the upper right corner of my panel has a speaker with a red circle and a bar through it. When I right click "preferences" it says:

"No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.

I got "gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument" when I tried to play some music.

When I tried to install alsamixer, it said the program did not exist on the repositories.
