Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE problems after update of Ubuntu 14.04

Asked by Joe Taylor

After the latest updates to 14.04.2 LTS I get mixed results when logging in. Sometimes I get the wallpaper with no dashboard and sometimes I get dash but if I try to do anything I get a blank screen & hang. Sometimes I just get the blank screen when I log in. I did a reinstall on a partition I have for experimentation and the system worked until I did the software updates and then I got the same results. (video driver in use is NVidia 304.125-0. I'm doing my installs with the nomodeset option and then using the gui to switch to the nvidea driver because the LiveCD won't boot correctly without escaping and making that change.) I tried to follow the instructions at BinaryDriverHowto to try a different video driver but it seems to be woefully out of date (jockey-text not found). I'm an old UNIX hand but new to Linux.

Does someone have a work around for the basic problem?

How do I change the video driver with apt-get or some other command line function? (I'm not anxious to just poke about with dpkg and apt-* but to this point I'm having trouble finding docs that point me in the right direction.)

Try removing and reinstalling the Nvidia driver. Do you get an OK display under the nouveau driver? Do you plan to 3D game on the system?

I still haven't found out how to switch back and forth between the drivers on the command line. The docs I found refer to things that I can't find on my system even using commands like sudo find / -name [pattern / name] . I can remove & reinstall the NVidia labeled packages using apt-get. Then I was thinking of rolling back all the packages that were updated when this broke. I'm not a 3D gamer but I do some photo editing and the display with the nouveau driver is distorted enough with that to not be usable. I'm definitely not an X guru and I've had trouble finding the configuration stuff to edit the display parameters to see if I can get something other than 800x640. (Monitor is best at 1900x1200.)

The nouveau driver works after the install but I shifted to the NVidia driver before doing the updates (or much at all actually) because the display is harder to work with given the resolution.

I have done the following: 12 hour memory test of all of memory using the one available on grub menu / installing a GeForce 7300LE from another system and that also does not work - it gives a hint of the launcher icons but goes black and hangs as soon as you click anywhere. (unfortunately I don't have access to another manufacturer's card)

Removed NVidia-304 driver and reinstalled it using apt. No change
Tried the other drivers listed as options in System settings gui (Nvidia-304-update and Nvidia-173) neither worked. In fact Nvidia-173 seemed to put apt and dpkg in a weird state. It showed packages that could not be removed. I'm going to start with a clean install so I can do more testing. I'm always able to get back to the nouveau driver by removing the NVidia driver using apt and the nouveau driver will give me a screen that displays but isn't very usable for firefox and is not usable at all for photo editing.

When I went to try to back out the packages that were in the upgrade that caused my video problems, I could not find the exact packages! I will keep looking but it seemed that I had to go back to the original compiz packages. That did not fix the issues. So, I'm stumped. I will keep looking for the old packages but I'm tempted to put in a bug report

I am still having this problem!  I have tracked down that it is the update to compiz that broke my system but I can not get the previous version

This affects me as well. Had to install mate desktop via command line (control + alt + F1). System works fine with mate desktop.
