I cannot get Ubuntu to do anything!!!

Asked by Wdaniel582

Ok I have an Emachines laptop that originally had Windows XP on it. I installed Ubuntu on it and it will not play sound....if I go to myspace or You Tube, it says that I need to install the latest flash player...when I go to do that, I down load the Tar.gz file and then it will not run on the system. So, basically I cannot not listen to any music on myspace, I cannot get java and it make me loathe Ubuntu....now, when I run my windows xp disk, it will install it, but ALL of my drivers are gone. I either want Ubuntu to work or I want XP back...what should I do???

You don't need to manually download anything to install most things on ubuntu. To solve your problem, open the Terminal by going to Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras non-free-codecs

type your password and enjoy!

Ubuntu will work fine (provided your hardware is supported) but it is important that you learn a few things about how Linux works. First, it's vital to understand the package manager. See https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/add-applications/C/index.html for help. Most of the time you will use this rather than downloading off the web and installing. It's also important to understand that many technologies are restricted by licenses that many Linux users and distributions don't agree with. They therefore do not include them by default. You are of course free to agree to those licenses yourself and install them. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats for more info.
