Google video requires Adobe Flash which is outlined on this page:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

It also talks about the various codecs that might help you play attachments and videos.

The flashplayer is downloaded, but the install command doesn't work- it gives a "no such file" message- even when I am looking at the file. Perhaps the instructions assume too great a level of competence on my part. I believe I have followed them to the letter, but maybe more detailed description of each keystroke needed would help. As I said they did work before I upgraded, with the original installation I did not download flash-it worked from day one.

There are some good guides on how to install various plugins for Firefox to get video and flash working here:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy

Did you try installing flashplayer-nonfree from the repository? First, you must enable the multiverse repository to see the package.

In Edgy, the Flash player is only version 7. In Feisty, the package has been updated to have version 9. Feisty is not stable yet and I do not recommend installing it. Hopefully version 9 will be backported to Edgy sometime soon.

Oh, I forgot to add that if none of the information I gave you works, you could always try installing Automatix 2, which has built-in Flash player 9 support for Edgy.

You can get more information on how to install Automatix 2 here:

To Jeff. It's generally not recommended to use either ubuntuguide or automatix.

Ubuntuguide doesn't give any details about why you do stuff, it just barks lists of commands to type which means people often don't learn why they are doing stuff and don't know the impact of doing it.

If you poke to official Ubuntu Bots about automatix on irc here's what you get:-

21:57 <@popey> !automatix
21:57 < ubotu> automatix is a script that tries to install some software, and often fails and breaks systems. We don't provide support for it, and we strongly discourage its use. Problems caused by Automatix are often hard to track and solve, and it might sometimes be easier to !install a fresh copy of Ubuntu. See also !WorksForMe
21:58 <@popey> !WorksForMe
21:58 < ubotu> Common Sense: Just because you can, does not mean you should. Think before you do. "Works for me" does not mean it is ok. The latest version of everything is not always useful if you aim for stability.

Just for your info.

It really sux because, seriously?, I can't just click a yahoo news video article, or youtube and watch it.??? I really wanted to get into Linux & Ubuntu, but after trying like 5 different ways, and this prob. not solved.....
Not to mention trying to watch a dvd that I OWN, and getting messages that I need permissions that are "illegal" in order to view them.... ARGH
