Booting problem

Asked by Andy

I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS on the hard drive and have it on usb. i am running WIN7.

During startup I chose ubuntu OS and then it goes to the boot screen. Then during boot screen it shows "serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /."
Options for action are "Press I to Ignore, S to Skip Mounting or M for Manual Recovery"
If I ignore it, then another message pops up saying "The disk drive for /tmp is not ready yet or not present".
If I skip it, it takes me to the black screen asking my username and password. I enter them in and then " username@ubuntu:~#" is displayed
If I select Manuel Recovery it takes me to the maintenance shell black screen saying
"Root filesystem check failed.
A maintenance shell will now be started.
CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and reboot the system.
 root@ubuntu:~# "
Not sure where to go from here, or what is going on as I am new to this OS.

Would you be able to give me step by step instructions for this procedure, additionally a description of what the commands are and their function/purpose?

For the boot to live CD, will I have to copy the files onto actual CD then?
Is the Linux partitions that maintenance shell?
