Cups failure on 14.04 reboot

Asked by PeterDz

Went to reboot after some work on gimp. Reboot starts, but fails to get beyond CUPS, where it just stalls., not getting any further, even if I leave it to run for sometime. How do I get around this. I can't even get back to the system so that I can restart from my backups (Deja vu).

Thoughts? Help?

Thanks

If you boot to an older kernel is it OK?

In a word "No". I have a whole load of old kernels have tried several in normal and recovery modes.

FWIW I am running 3.13.0-52-generic.

I have just re-booted using -24-generic and it gives me a login screen in what looks like safe mode, but refuses to let me login - won't accept me as a valid user. However I can reboot using a USB stick, and then I can access my backups.

I have decided to do a parallel installation, extract anything that I don't already have backed up and then do a clean re-install - and pray! Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

I hope that the clean reinstall sort the speed problems that I was having too.
