Firefox Closes in Ubuntu 6.10

Asked by eperrel

My Firefox browser will automatically close whenever I try to type in a new website into the address bar or if I try to log into a password protected page. I have recently upgraded from Ubunto 6.06 to 6.10 and did not have this problem before. Does anyone know how I can fix this or get the system to reinstall Firefox?

It could be that it's not firefox that's to blame but your firefox profile that contains details about installed add-ons and other settings.

You could try moving the profile out of the way - so that firefox creates a new one, and then see if firefox behaves itself:-

Firstly, open firefox and save your bookmarks (assuming you have some to save) by going to Bookmarks --> Organise Bookmarks --> File --> Export. Save them somewhere. Then close firefox and move the .firefox directory aside.

mv ~/.firefox ~/.broken_firefox

Start firefox.

Then see if it works okay. If it does then you know it's something in that profile which could for example be an addon.

You can restore your bookmarks with Bookmarks --> Organise Bookmarks --> File --> Import.

Does that work?
