"...sorry unable to cut & paste the result..."
Why?
1. Open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t)
2. Type in the command as given by actionparsnip or - even better: mark the command with pressed mouse button that it is shown in reverse color, switch to the terminal window and press the middle mouse button for pasting.
3. Use the terminal window's menu entries "edit - select all" and "edit - copy" to copy the output and paste everything into this question document.

But your output says Vivid which is Ubuntu 15.04 and not LTS.

See https:/
For showing the Ubuntu release that is running on your system you can use the terminal command
lsb_release -crid
When discussing software problems it might matter whether you are using the intel/amd 32bit or 64bit variant of the operating system (or even a variant for some other architecture like armel or powerpc).
For showing the architecture you can use the terminal command
uname -a
(architecture information is at the end of the output line).
Does package updating meanwhile work again? If not, please provide the output of the terminal command
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Since no progres with vivid ... I have reinstal Lubuntu 14.10 on my 386 bit with 1 GB memory ...everything is ok ..however the sound is low though the volume is at 100 ..btw I have to install ubuntu restricted ..
Is that a memory issue ... if yes could it run version 15.04 ...since the system is asking to upgrade...?
Following are the results

In my opinion installing 14.10 was not the best choice.
Ubuntu 14.10 will be supported only until July 2015, and requires an update to 15.04 by that date.
You probably should have tried Ubuntu 14.04 which is the long-term-supported release (until April 2019).
1 GB memory should be enough for any Ubuntu system (there is no significant difference in memory requirement between the different releases, Lubuntu and Xubuntu generally run better with low memory than standard Ubuntu).
Do you still have a problem with the system (except low volume on sound)?

@ manfred
I know ...no choice ......I think the Alsamixer depleted the memory ..... when I crank up the volume ...the sound dies until now
Perhaps there's a memory management problem otherwise 1GB will not be enough to run Lubuntu too :(
I'll give 14.04 another try however won't expect too much

@manfred
Installed 14.04 and as expected ... no sound
Hoping in 16.04 this will be not a problem ...
