lightdm: newly created user logs in ok, existing user gets only blank X screen

When logging into lightdm as "karel" I get a blank X screen, which is perfectly functional as such - from a terminal I can launch "firefox --display :0" and so forth - but user karel does not get a window manager active. For newly created user "daisy" everything works as expected.

The trouble started when I tried to get rid of the unity package, pls. don't ask me what exact order of actions I went through.

Trusty Tahr 14.04.02 LTS, kernel 3.13.0.-51
lightdm 1-5-10.0ubuntu1
running on amd64

Did you make the home folder of the user and chown it to the new user as well?

Yes. Daisy is the user account that works, it was newly created to help in diagnosis.
Karel was pre-existing account which is now apparently messed up.
I can't copy and paste right now, but both have their homedir in /home, both have "users" as their primary group, and both homedirs belong to their resp. user and to the group users.

Can you help with this problem?
