Ubuntu 14.04 crashes Internet Browsers (Chrome & Firefox) when watching YouTube

Asked by gradstud

Hi,

I have a technical complaint about Ubuntu 14.04. Every time I'm on YouTube watching a video, after a while, suddenly and for no apparent reason, my browser window will just freeze. The video's audio is still playing in the background, but the video itself will be frozen. And not only does it freeze, it then crashes...BIG TIME!!!. I'm notified of a "page unresponsive" message, AND any additional windows from the same browser that are open (which is normally 1 or 2), they too, freeze and crash. The only way to resolve this issue is to quick the browser completely, resulting in me losing all of the pages I had open for work. I initially thought this was an isolated issue pertaining to the browser itself (i.e. Google Chrome). However, when I switched browsers (Firefox), the same exact problem would occur. And this has been happening with such frequency that I'm convinced that the problem stems from Ubuntu itself. I've never had these problems before with Ubuntu. It recently started happening within the last couple of months. I know I've been bombarded with updates recently (though I regularly update Ubuntu anyway). So I'm wondering if one of the patches recently released has a bug in it that's causing this problem. I've had Ubuntu 14.04 for several months with no problems, these issues just started, as stated, within the last couple of months.

So my question is: does Ubuntu have a resolution to this problem? I cannot continue to work with this persistent issue where I'm researching a video, and suddenly it decides to stop working, hence jeopardizing the operation of all other open browser windows, causing me to lose my work. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me remedy this problem sooner rather than later.

Thank you, and look forward to hearing from someone soon.

Sincerely,

Gradstud

sudo apt-get --purge remove flashplugin-installer

Then enable the partner repository and install the adobe-flashplugin package

Close and reopen your browser to test.

What exactly is the 'partner repository' and how do I enable it?

Can you help with this problem?
