tried to update a few days ago and found the daemon died

anyway I recently tried to update more than a few updates for my 12.04 lucid lts , but now keeps on coming up with the error send crash report every time i log in and go online i can still go online no worries there but cannot update through the update manager or through the ubuntu soft ware centre, and was not able to install my last updates either for it won't let me i am using firefox 36.1 and says a problem occured when checking for updates
this is what it says also so for the last 4 days or so i can't update anything becuase i had a error message telling me the daemon died
Task cannot be monitored or controlled

The connection to the daemon was lost. The background daemon probably crashed.

how can i use my computer unless i update it at some stage soon?
anyone have suggestions on what to do to go from here/

the error said unreportable reason
i have some obsolute package versions installed and to upgrade the foloowing packages apt, aptutils, gnupg, libcbin,etc

Hello Mark thanks for trying to answer my question, and my answer is I
didn't copy anything down from the terminal on that day, I copied some of
my question down from the error message I get when i log in, then try to go
to the internet, so I don't know what else to say, although I updated some
things but i didn't get the error message until after wards when i closed
the update manager down
