After system update failure to boot from power-on

After a recent system update that included Linux core, laptop failed to restart. Laptop no longer booted successfully on power-on. Now, must invoke grub loader from which a recovery mode boot is the only successful option. A normal boot option when offered then allows the machine to boot successfully. BIOS boot options appear to be correct, but the machine is new and the BIOS not viewed until this problem occurred.
