none of the new updates to1504 will install any more

Nothing will install any more does the downloading and says installing but at the end I get error saying nothing installed
haha going back to 14.10 where it all worked at

Ubuntu 14.10 is only supported til July 2015

Had to go back further as I did not have DVD with ISO of 14.10 so am at 14.04 one of the LTS ones
Mostly I added the question as it seems 15.04 was not quite ready for prime time has gobs of bugs

That is one of the differences between LTS- and non-LTS-versions.

LTS aims at stability and thorough testing; usually there are no new features introduced between the last non-LTS version before an LTS version and the LTS-versions itself.

Bigger changes usually are introduced in non-LTS-versions. As an example the upstart-systemd-change was introduced with Ubuntu 15.04, and only with the broad rollout some problems in specific situations have popped up.

So if you want a stable system where you can expect that the great majority of bugs has already been solved, then you should stick to the LTS versions.
