Graphics Driver (Via)

Asked by James Haigh

Hi, I have Via Unichrome IGP Pro graphics but I don't know what chipset or how to find out. I want to download the correct driver from via but I get stuck at this webpage.

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=45&CatID=3220

My screen is 1280x800 but my res is only 800x600. I managed to solve it by trying different suggestions but when I retraced my steps I couldn't work out what actually worked. At first what seemed to work was messing with xorg.conf. After 3 days of it working at 1280x800, I reinstalled my system for an unrelated reason and the 'solution' that seemed to work last time, didn't.

Rather than trying all the suggestions again I just would like a simple newb friendly solution. This link is probably the best solution but I don't know how to find out my chipset ID.

My laptop is Fujitsu Siemens if that helps.

Thanks.

Hello James..

For Via unichrome cards you can use OpenChrome Drivers..

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

But before that you need to get extra repositories Enabled (assuming you are on ubuntu 7.10) ref the below link to do the same..

http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=2794

After getting extra repositories enabled please follow the steps in the above guide..

To fix your screen resolution..

Type the following command in a terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> terminal)

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Or for those questions with high priority use:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

And answer simple questions,

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.
