ATI drivers mystery

Asked by Ricci

Hi guys,
Thanks so much for the earlier help, It's just magic being able to get such quick responses and accurate help for which we all owe you thanks.
Current problem is the ATI Radeon X1200 on an AMD 64. I've been following this around for 3 days through everything I could find on the forums and Wiki but still not got there. Last best shot was this page http://emmetcaulfield.net/Tech/Ubuntu64+ATI/, but one is left with the statement 'After doing this, I was able to install the packages and follow this guide to get Compiz working on Ubuntu/gutsy on an Athlon64 with an ATI X1550.' but how does one install from there??? I've got a directory, with files in it but none of them self install.
Any help gratefully received.

In this instance, I am running an Acer AMD 64 with an on board ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card with Ubuntu 7.04 Upgraded to 7.10.

Thanks for that, sorry for the delay, we've been wiped out by a hurricane here, no phones and power intermittant, had to drive to an internet cafe at a nearby town to get on line again.
Te page you gave me doesn't actually help because it relater to the fglrx driver and I'm trying to install the new one, it's the help page I started with which led me to http://emmetcaulfield.net/Tech/Ubuntu64+ATI/ and that page leaves me hanging without complete instructions to install the driver.
