No Internet access

Asked by JohnJackett

I'm new to the entire linux scene.

I had windows on my pc (amd64), and I resized the partition, installed ubuntu and thought all was well.

now, I can't get on the internet. no network at all. I don't know if it is the ethernet card or modem. (I've got cable internet.)

It sees the ethernet card, but doesn't go anywhere. . . now what?

Hello,

open a console, type the following command and return the ouput.
/sbin/ifconfig -a

cat /etc/network/interfaces

try to do a 'sudo dhclient eth0' to get an ip address from the DHCP server ( I assume eth0 is only network interface and this is the one plugged to your routeur or modem).

Cheers.

Can you ping or try connecting to your router from Firefox:

Most likely at:

http://192.168.0.1
or
http://192.168.1.1

Could you also provide information about what type of device (router/modem) you use to connect and what IP you get assigned in Ubuntu.

Can you help with this problem?
