Unable to install Ubuntu with Nvidia GeForce GTX 970

Asked by Jędrek Domański

I have just bought a new PC with motherboard MSI Z97, i5 4690k and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 graphic card and I am not able to install Ubuntu. I have tried Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10, 14.04, 14.10 and none of these work. When I insert the CD or a bootable USB and boot to PC up all I get is just a black screen with an error similar to this one:

[ 2.817690 nouveau E[ DEVICE][0000:01:00.0] unknown chipset, 0x124020a1

[ 2.817724 nouveau E[ DRM] failed to create 0x80000080, -22

I have surfed the entire internet in search for a solution but here;s the thing. They suggest to access the bootloader and chnge the kernel boot parameter to 'nomodeset rdblacklist=novueau or something like that but I am not even able to access the bootlader. I found out that the problem is with the linux default graphics driver nouveau which now is placed to the kernel directly not to the packages so when the system boots it loads the driver, I also found out that these operating systems do not support my graphic card. How can I solve my problem?

Try the boot option

nouveau.blacklist=1

Sorry, I didn't try this because I am unable to access the bootloader at all.

When you boot from the installation medium you should be able to press F6 for entering boot options, similar to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=forcepae-vivid.png

I'm not getting to that screen. As I said, I'm getting that error message before the bootloader's menu entries even show up.

Can you try installing Ubuntu server (you can easily add the desktop packages later)?
Eventually you can also try Ubuntu minimal https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

Then why buy a CPU built in if you knew you were going to buy a PC Express video card??? Not all Intel CPU have them.... Bit of research before spending makes a lot of sense

I don't understand, what does CPU have to do with this? By the way, the CPU is not built in, I bought all the components separately and the PC was assembled.

Your i5 4690k CPU has Intel 4600 GPU inside it.

http://ark.intel.com/products/80811/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

You are having display issues. With a CPU without this unnecessary feature you would have significantly fewer issues.

Can I disable it in BIOS? I think I can. I will give it a shot today evening and let you know.

I have had the same problem with the GTX 970, disabling the Intel graphics will solve you problem.

@actionparsnip: It's pretty hard to buy a consumer cpu without Intel graphics. And if you want to run 4k or any other demanding graphic you will have to get a better GPU. So don't blame people wanting the best hardware there money can buy. Intel graphics sucks ;)

http://m.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2142674/intel-quietly-releases-pair-gpu-core-i5-chips

States:

Of Intel's three quad-core Core i5 chips, only the 95W Core i5-2550K has the firm's GPU on board with a standard clock speed of 3.4GHz. Interestingly while the Core i5-2380P and i5-2450P lack GPU cores, Intel still quotes a TDP of 95W for all three Core i5 chips.

For example.

It's very easy to avoid with a little research.

https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/cpu/

Also lists a Intel Core i7-5820K which has no integrated Intel GPU
http://ark.intel.com/m/products/82932/Intel-Core-i7-5820K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_60-GHz#@product/specifications

So no, it's not "pretty hard" at all. I just gave 2 examples of how to avoid them.

Can you help with this problem?
