Please read this site.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

You said you upgraded a few days ago. The replacement for 14.10 came out a few days ago, 15.04. 14.10 will be EOL (end of life) July 2015. There will be no support then.
How did you upgrade? If you were using Ubuntu 12.04, you would upgrade to 14.04, then to 14.10. If you were using 12.10, then you must upgrade to 13.04, then to 13.10, then to 14.04, then to 14.10.
If you use 14.10, in July 2015, you will need to upgrade to 15.04.
Sometimes upgrading multipliable times can cause problems. Have you downloaded newest HPLIP?
Please tell how upgraded.

Did you upgrade from 12.04 to 14.10? If so, what steps did you take

There is no 'Ubuntu 12'.
