Help Installing Wireless Network Card

Asked by Middie

I have just installed V5.10 into a laptop which has a Netgear WG511 v2 wireless PC card. The installation CD and instructions covered Windows XP, there was nothing on whether the card can run in a linux O/S or how to install.

Has anyone done this?

The following details how to setup WiFi on Ubuntu:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs

The following is specific to one version of your card, and may help:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Device/Netgear_WG511_v3_Made_in_China

Also be aware that Ubuntu 6.06 has a longer support lifetime, newer kernel (and therefore drivers), so if you haven't used 5.10 much you might want to consider upgrading or reinstalling to get newer "stuff" :)

Hi Alan,
Took your advice and decided to upgrade to 6.06 before I attempted to
get the WiFi setup.
I followed the steps in getting a copy and burning a CD as outlined at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
I then tried following the steps outlined at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DapperUpgrades I get the following
results:

   1. Insert CD labeled Ubuntu 6.06.1 i386, opens File Browser, close
      File Browser
   2. Open Update Manager, asked password etc
   3. Information message window - it is not possible to upgrade all
packages. The following packages are not upgraded" cpp cpp-4.0
   4. Click OK Message says system is up-to-date
   5. Select Reload - get same message as point 3
   6. Select Preferences select Add CD, reads CD and adds entry for
      Software Sources
   7. Click OK, get error message Unable to get exclusive lock, click
Close, get same message as point 3

That didn't work, :-( so I decided to try restarting the computer with
the CD still in the drive. Here is the results:

   1. Select menu item Start or Install Ubuntu
   2. System boots from CD
   3. The desktop opened with two applications - Examples and Install
   4. Right click Install and select Open
   5. Opens Install, Welcome window 1 of 6, first question about
language - select English then Forward
   6. Where are you, select Sydney and Forward again
   7. Keyboard layout question 3 of 6, select American English, test
keys in box, all seems OK, select Forward
   8. And that is as far as it goes, the cursor is a circle spinning and
it stays that way until I finally select Cancel :'(

Do you have any suggestions on how I can get the upgrade to run?

TIA
David

Which CD ISO did you download and burn? The Live or Alternate one?

Have you done much with the 5.10 system since you installed it? Would it be easier to just reinstall over the top?

I haven't done anything much with the 5.10 system and I have been trying
to reinstall over the top by booting with the CD but had problems. Is
there another way?

The file I downloaded is labeled ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386
I'm not sure if the downloaded file is the Live or Alternate, I got to
it from
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download?action=show&redirect=download
and selected an Australian mirror at
http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/ubuntu-releases/6.06/
and selected the one listed as PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
<http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/ubuntu-releases/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso>

There are two main installation CDs, the Live (desktop) one you used, and the "alternate" one. It's sometimes found to be more successful in certain situations than the desktop CD. You might want to try that instead.

You will find it on the same page as the desktop CD image you already downloaded:-

http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/ubuntu-releases/6.06/

It has a text-based installer but it asks mostly the same questions during the installation.

Also, might want to check the cd for defects.
