Mounting NTFS partitions at boot

Asked by Bruce Healey

I run a multi boot system on which I have a Windows 10 partition. This has a nasty habit of not cleanly dismounting NTFS partitions. When booting into Ubuntu 14.10 (gnome) I would get a message suggesting that I might try a manual partition mount. Now under ubuntu 15.04 I just get a message indicating that an emergency has occurred and gives me the option of control D or password for entering root. There is no indication whatsoever of what the problem is.

Fortunately, I also have retained a 14.10 partition which gave me the clue as to the problem. Rebooting into Windows 7 released the partition and I was able to boot into ubuntu 15.04 as normal.

Is this a change to 15.04 or is there something strange about my system? I am getting some other strange effects such as the blank screen before log-in that so many others seem to have. If this is a change, it is a backward step.

Run a chkdsk on the NTFS partition. Make sure it is healthy

Thank you for responding. However, the problem with mounting the partition can be cleared by booting into Windows 7 which properly releases the partition.

The question I was asking was why does Ubuntu 15.04 not give the same helpful message about the problem which previous versions did.
