Ubuntu 15.04 overheats

Asked by Renardo

Two days ago I upgraded to Ubuntu 15.04 (from 14.10). Since then, my notebook (HP envy dv6) fan is nearly always on, and the notebook switched off twice, probably due to overheating. Both times I was working with Firefox, on pages that might contain some busy javascripts..

Going back to the 3.16.0-31 kernel (still offered by grub) seems to circumvent the problem. When I boot 3.16 the fan runs only occasionally. Running Firefox with busy scripts pushes CPU load up (of course) but when the script finishes the load goes down again, which it does not seem to do under 3.19 (Ubuntu 15.04).

thermald is running. On one occasion "top" showed my several instances of it before the machine switched off. Normally there is only one.

Any ideas what I can do (other than using the 3.16 kernel)?

Thanks in advance, Renardo.

I cannot find a way to attach a text file here, so I paste some sample "top" output that shows that eight instances of kidle_inject are trying to keep system load down while the "biggest" CPU hog is firefox with 8 percent load... on a four-core system:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
  8068 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,9 0,0 3:35.38 kidle_inject/4
  8065 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,3 0,0 3:36.76 kidle_inject/1
  8066 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,3 0,0 3:34.61 kidle_inject/2
  8067 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,3 0,0 3:34.69 kidle_inject/3
  8070 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,3 0,0 3:34.74 kidle_inject/6
  8071 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 23,3 0,0 3:34.79 kidle_inject/7
  8069 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 22,9 0,0 3:35.46 kidle_inject/5
  8064 root -51 0 0 0 0 S 21,6 0,0 3:33.94 kidle_inject/0
  3000 refo 20 0 1820612 746724 98212 S 8,0 4,6 16:52.16 firefox
  1496 root 20 0 784344 183240 159752 S 4,3 1,1 3:53.79 Xorg
  3303 refo 20 0 625196 42792 32736 S 2,0 0,3 0:09.81 gnome-terminal-
  2246 refo 20 0 1359936 115984 64056 S 1,3 0,7 2:15.38 compiz

When I stopped firefox everything came down to normal. It looks like the system is much more sensitive to the same load as before, and not by illusion: The air coming from the cooling vents is actually hot.

As the problem persisted after installing a new kernel (3.19.0-16) I created a bug (1452421) for the issue.
