upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 stuck

Asked by Chelmite

When I got the daily popup from the Software Updater that said new updates are available, I reviewed the updates (nothing major), said okay, and it installed a few things. At the end it said that 15.04 was available. I said okay, and it spent hours downloading lots of things. At around midnight the status window seemed to be stuck "Configuring libgutenprint2 (amd64)". The next morning it looked like no progress had been made. There don't seem to be any hidden or minimized windows, so I don't know what it's waiting for.

Here is the (truncated) installation log:

Did you do what the system suggested?

This likely means that your installation is broken.
    Try running the command
      gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders.cache

Yes?

The gdk-pixbuf message is well known, see e.g. Bug #1282294 but it should not prevent the upgrade from continuing.

Have you already tried rebooting?

What is the output of the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid

I did run the gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders command.

If I reboot, how do I resume the upgrade?

% uname -a
Linux kelem-system76 3.16.0-36-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 14 20:08:31 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
% lsb_release -crid
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 15.04
Release: 15.04
Codename: vivid

The output of the lsb_release command shows that the upgrade has already gone far enough that the system shows itself as Ubuntu 15.04.

You should be able to reboot, and the missing steps of the upgrade (if there are any) should be completed as part of the regular package upgrade processes.

Can you help with this problem?
