no entry sign

Dell 240 Dimension Ubuntu 12.04 2GB ram

no entry sign at top screen.

Said error occurred when checking for update. Can't up date

Any advise please?

Please follow steps 1 to 6 in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure and in step 6 do not create a new question document, but paste all output into this one that you have already created.

I did STEP 1 and I them could update my OS.
