Update: After the system has been running for 20 minutes the flickering stops. Strange

Its some random kernel you found. If you stray from the kernel in the official repositories then results cannot be guaranteed.

:-) It's not from some random repository I downloaded and checked it from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/. The flicker is solved if the screen resolution is changed from the standard 1366x768 to 1360x768 then the flicker stops instantly. Do you want me to mark this problem as solved? Because the underlying cause hasn't been identified but it is a work around

It's not from the official Ubuntu repository (installable using software centre etc). You have manually installed the kernel so is not intended for your release. If it was then it would come down in regular updates.

If you boot to the kernel intended for your release, does it work OK?

If I boot to anything up to and including 3.19.4 it works fine. I will close off this issue

How do you I close off this issue without marking as problem solved?

Can you help with this problem?
