Sounds like a failing drive. I suggest you ensure your backups are good. If you grab the Ultimate Boot CD there is a Western Digital drive tester there (Made by Western Digital themselves) to test their products. It'll take a while to run but will tell you if the drive is happy or not. Sounds like it needs replacing to me.

the hard drive has been fully tested often
it tests ok

I'm getting this on 3 hard drives on 3 machines (possibly a 4th)
what I'm finding is that the hard on the machines are testing good with gsmartcontrol fsck -c etc..
but they are all showing records of drives over heating 79c, 97c, 100c all within days of each other.
I check my drives monthly and my RAM and dust out,
for this to happen only on my xubuntu laptop (HP) & 2 desktop systems maybe a bad coincidence
but considering the data loss so far is cause for alarm
