DVD burner shows as CDrom Disc

Asked by gimpguy2000

Hi ,

I have a strange issue that just started. I had this happen in both 64 version and 32 version of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon which is why I went to 32 but still happens.

My DVD burner is shown as CDrom DISC, not drive. I can actually put files into it as a folder type it seems to be burned later, however, I have lost all control over my DVD burner. It won't power on or eject, etc... never had this happen before so don't know what's going on. The drive works as normal in Windows or Fedora. Plus tried it in two other machines, works just fine.

My setup is Asrock nvidia mb with Athlon 64 dual core 4200, WD 80 gig IDE. I have a WD 80 gig sata with Windows as well, but Ubuntu is on the IDE drive. I have 2gigs DDR2 ram, and this PC is all new from ground up.

I was using the 64 version prior and the DVD worked great for a while, then just wouldn't work. Then when installin the 32 version yesterday, it worked then today, nothing.

EDIT: I left a disc in the drive and booted, however, I did NOT open the tray at all or keep it active and yep, it was not detected as a DVD drive. So as long as I keep opening the tray to keep the drive active, it will be recognized correctly.

I also disconnected the drive, changed jumper settings, same issue. Switched to different cable, same issue. Cleaned the drive. Same issue.

So truly, I think this is completely an Ubuntu issue.

I posted this originally in the forums but seems no one has any idea.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi, thanks for the reply. This is all it's listed as.. which is listed even when it's not hooked up so I doubt it's being seen at all. Oddly enough, I can't even open the tray manually, it's as if when in Ubuntu, there is no power to it either. It was fine and if I re-install Ubuntu, it works for a while then quits again. I use it a lot for backups etc... and have had to be in Windows to use it for a while now but it works fine there. I just hate being in Windows though, lol.

/dev/hdb /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec 0 0

It's the only rom drive I have BTW. Yeah, I don't get why it just started this, in almost a year, and a while on this PC, never had this issue.

Thanks,

 Paul

Thanks, yeah I'm very familiar with that, however, even if I do that there is no power.

Cheers,

My problem is solved, I simply uninstalled Ubuntu. As much as I hate Windows, it gets me through, until some of these issues are found, then I'll go back perhaps.
