Black screen after system resume

Asked by Bryan Maltais

I am on a dell inspiron 17R, running ubuntu 14.10. When the system goes to sleep (ie the screen shuts off) and then i go to resume it, the screen stays black. It is unusable and I cannot get the screen back without manually rebooting with the power button. I tried searching for this problem but a whole range of similar but not quite the same issues. Any insight on what to check/upgrade/etc. would be awesome! Thanks.

Utopic is EOL in July this year. I suggest you update to Vivid either now, or once it is released in 3 days.

Okay - finally getting back to this. I installed 15 and it was virtually unuseable. The machine would freeze on boot 9 out of 10 times, and when it did boot up it would still have freezing issues.

I reverted back to 14.04.2 LTS. It works better than 14.10 and 15...however I am still having issues with the screen freezing. After doing more research here is my system information:
Dell Inspiron 5737
Processor: Intel Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4500U CPU @ 1.80GHz
Video: Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller with i915 driver

Essentially what happens is that unity freezes. I can still move my mouse...but can't click on anything. This occurs after one of the following: the screen dims, goes to sleep and resumes, adjust the brightness of the screen (a sure bet happens almost every time).

It seems there is a lot of posts out there about the Haswell video controllor issues on Ubuntu...not sure if there's anything i can do. It appears the intel graphics installer program that allows you to update drivers is no longer supported on LTS releases.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - my machine is barely useable on Ubuntu.
