Updated Graphics Drivers for LTS releases

Asked by TesX

Please add backports for newer graphics driver.

Currently I am using the NVIDIA driver 331, but from the NVIDIA website the driver 346.59...
Since the package name for 331 is nvidia-331, creating a nvidia-346 won't conflict with anything.

Rationale:
With the arrival of Steam and Steam OS, Ubuntu (and all the Linux world) there is need for the latest and greatest graphics drivers available as packages to allow easy install.
Since the installation is manual this change won't break any system...
As Ubuntu, the user friendliest Linux distro, it is your role to provide the best Linux experience (expecially for newcomers, the first impression is the most important)...

PS: I also need this because I bought an LG 21:9 monitor and the maximum resolution available is 1920x1080...

Thanks :-)

What nvidia gpu do you have?

The GPU is a NVIDIA GTX 650.
On Windows (with driver 347.50) it works, so it's not a GPU hardware problem.

Then the version is of no use to you. Unless you have a 32bit OS or are using an Optimum based graphic setup and are seeing issues when you switch between the two.... Are you seeing any of these symptoms? You also don't have a GPS from the 900 series which the driver version has added in it
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=nvidia-346.59-linux-update

So... Why do you need the new version when none of the features in the version apply to your setup?

Ok, I may not need the 349 driver, but what about other people?
Why not providing the latest stable driver available from vendors?

We are talking about an LTS release which won't be upgraded to the next version for at least 2 years!!
In the meanwhile a huge number of driver releases will happen and you're stuck with the old driver version.
Almost every new driver improves the performance (expecially useful for gaming) and adds new supported GPUs.

If ubuntu wants to be user friendly HAS to provide a better way to install the latest driver, instead of switching to a TTY, kill X11, and install the NVIDIA binary driver from the website via commandline.
It is scary enough for most people, and they may return to Windows where you install the driver from a simple GUI app!

As I said my monitor not working correctly is only a Post Scriptum, not the main question...

Anyway, take a look at:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/80647/en-us

* Fixed a bug that prevented internal 4K panels on some laptops from being driven at a sufficient bandwidth to support their native resolutions.

Maybe it is somewhat related?

I suggest you report a bug then and get the version updated for others.

Gamers always think they need the latest video drivers when what they have will actually do the same job because users (especially gamers) just look at the version number rather than looking at what is new.

"I need the latest driver"
"Why"
"Because one exists"
"Well the company had a rebrand and the only difference is an update to the logo."

Stupid stuff like this happens all the time.

One of the aims of the LTS versions is stability. So there is no intention to add the newest packages immediately.
You might find a PPA that contains updates versions of the nvidia drivers that you can use if you want.

I know, but creating a new package named "nvidia-349" should not affect stability, since it won't be installed by default.

Another example:
Anyway the "fglrx" driver in 14.04 LTS has a serious issue: it has a memory leak that eats a lot of RAM after some hours...
I had to manually install the latest driver from the AMD website to fix it...
It was of serious importance for me since the computer is of a my friend and he does PC support and he needs to make clones and save customer's data before formatting so the computer has to stay on for long time...

What do you think?
Thanks :)

Anyway, wouldn't the process be similar to the backported kernels (as described here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack)?

Can you help with this problem?
