kubuntu places two boots on two hard disk in the same time

Asked by chanbert

There is 3 hard disks on my computer.
hda : master with windows,
hdb : where I want Kubuntu to be installed
sda : (sata disk) Mandriva home where I stored pictures and datas.

I wanted Kubuntu to replace Mandriva on hdb.
When I have installed Kubuntu on hdb, I have been ask where to place GRUB.
My answer was on Master Boot (hda).
Nevertheless Grub installed the boot on two disk, hda (master boot) AND sda (sata 'Mandriva home' datas).
So, now I cannot access Mandriva home even with Mandriva (on cd live) or Knoppix (cd live too).
I can see the files on sda with Kubuntu but the message is I have no right to read the datas.

What can I do for the datas to be rescued on sda ?

Thank you for your help,

Bertrand

have you tried to read the datas with the root privileges (ALT+F2 and type kdesu konqueror /media/) ? It is not advised but for rescue you can try it. If it works, feed back here, I will tell you how to change the permissions on your disk.

Thank you for your answer.
First of all, I am a french beginner. It may explain the difficulty understanding quickly the informations !
When I type kdesu konqueror /media/ I only see the cdrom (which is renamed cdroot instead of cdrom) and the kubuntu hard disk, not the other disks.
When I type system:/media I see the three hard disks.
What can I do to see the hard disks ?

The most likely reason you cannot access the files is that the uid and/or gid of the user in Kubuntu was not the same as the one in Mandriva. You need to change the ownership of those files (as root) to your desired user / group for the new system. Then you will be able to access those files normally.

You are right. I got difficulties to change root files for the disk.
I restored my pictures (the most important for me) with a dedicated software : photorec.
Many thanks for everybody for your help,
