Installing Ubuntu from Windows without an Internet connection

Asked by twocs

I have an old computer that does not support booting from USB, and it's not booting from the CD drive either. I can start it up in Windows 98, so I want to install Ubuntu from Windows. I can transfer any files by using a USB drive. But as the Windows 98 OS is Chinese, and I can't read Chinese, that means I can't connect to the Internet.

Basically I want to put all the files that I need onto the USB drive. Then I can run the files from the USB, something like Wubi but without an Internet connection. What can I do?

HAVE YOU CHANGED THE BOOT ORDER IN SETUP AT POWER ON BY PRESSING F8 OR F10

IT PROBABLY IS READING IN THIS ORDER: HARD DISK C CD ROM FLOOPY

YOU NEED TO SET IT TO CD ROM HARD DISK FLOPPY

ONCE YOUR LOADED CHANGE IT BACK

I JUST INSTALLED UBUNTU ONTO AN OLD DELL WITH A CELERON PROCESSOR FOR MY NEIGHBOR WHO HAD WIN 98

THIS MAY HELP

PEACE =]

I forgot to mention that the CD drive isn't reading the disks, either.

DOES THE CD DISK FUNCTION ?

IF SO YOU MAY NEED TO GET ANOTHER COPY TO LOAD UBUNTU

I HAVE HAD TIMES WERE I HAVE HAD TO TRY TO BURN 2 OR 3 DISKS TO INSTALL

IF YOU CAN USE ANOTHER LINUX TRY BLAG OR ARK

BLAG IS A COMPLETE CORPORATE OVERTHROUGH

AND ARK IS USED BY 7 UNIVERSITIES WORLD WIDE INCLUDING OREGON STATE WHICH CONTINUE TO UPDATE

THE CODE AS WELL

IF THESE OPTIONS WONT WORK PERHAPS CALL SOME SHOPS (REPAIR) NEARBY AND SEE IF ANY

OF THESE GUYS SECRETLY TECH LINUX

YOU MAY GET THEM TO LOAD FROM ANOTHER HARD DRIVE.

The disk is ok, since I just used it to install on my other computer. I think it's just that the CD drive doesn't work--it has some other problems like the drive won't open properly.

Next week I can use another CD drive, but I was hoping I could install Ubuntu this week with a Windows .exe though I don't have an Internet connection.

I think the new Hardy beta release has just solved my problem. If I open the CD while Windows is running, there is an option to install. So all I need to do is run DaemonTools or another Virtual CD drive and use the Ubuntu CD to install right under Window's nose.

Using your new CD: In Windows, just click open to run the new Ubuntu OS CD. This will run Wubi, an installer that will install Ubuntu for you, and it will give you the option to install Ubuntu on the same partition as your current OS. Just follow the directions and install Ubuntu this way. You can get lots of help from Ubuntu users: for starters read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

If you are using Vista you should read a note on: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/804

You can also boot from the CD if you are just testing out Ubuntu. It will run a little slower than if you install it onto your hard drive, but it's a good way to find out if your computer will support it well. If you're using an older computer you might want to try Xubuntu. My Pentium 3 is running well at only 450 MHz with 128 MB of RAM. Perfect for surfing the net, but a little bit slow with videos or Web 2.0 content, I admit.
