using samba and locked files

Asked by Gerlof Brinck

Goodmorning,

My desktop is working on Ubuntu 14.04 with no problem. I use this desktop for my work. The projects are stalled on this desktop. For working on my reports I use my laptop. I get the reports through my network on my desktop work on it and file it again on the harddisk of my desktop. Until recent my laptop was working on windows xp. With samba no problem. Due to attacks I got rit of the windows xp. First xubuntu 14.04.2 xfce, very nice but no access to my files on my desktop, whatever I tried. So I got rid of Xubuntu (sorry!) and installed Mint 13 xfce, access to the files but...when I save a file from my laptop on the desktop, the file has a lock on it. I tried everything with accessrights (all, I'am the onlyone who is working on both computers) still the lock. I know I have to change somewere something, but what??

I hope someone can help me out. Thanks.

Gerlof.

The OS of my desktop is Ubuntu 14.04 and on my laptop the Ubuntu based Mint 17 xfce (I have tried Xubuntu, it was not possible to get access from my laptop to my desktop).

The samba on the desktop from the Ubuntu download centre, on the Mint 17 it was along with the installation. I downloded the grafic interface from the download centre.

Hope I have given you enough information.

Kindly regards

Gerlof.

Then why are you using Samba when both sides are Linux? It makes no sense.

Install openssh-server on the system to connect to and you are done. No messing with Samba and all that goes with it.

You can then use nautilus to connect to the server, using the credentials you log in to the server side with. You now have an SFTP server and the connection is secure. If you port forward 22 TCP on your router you can access the data whilst outside your LAN.

Dear Andrew,

Thanks for your fast answer.
Is it possible to use openssh-server and samba on my desktop? There is one windows computer (8.1) as well (i have forgotten it) special for certain Canon programma's which works only good under windows.....This computer has to communicate with my desktop.

So if I understand you correctly I can use openssh-server for the communication between my desktop ad my laptop. And maybe samba as well for the communication between my desktop ans my windows computer.

One more question (if I may) do I have to download and install the optional add-ons as well?

Kindly regards

Gerlof.

Yes because they listen on different ports. You don't need any addons. Just install openssh-server and you are done. There are applications for Windows which can map SFTP as a network drive too.
