I have ubuntu 8.04 LTS edition and have forgotten my username

Asked by Jeanne Jussel

I checked the community boards and tried to find my username by holding down shift while booting up after bios screen. It did not take me to the reboot screen. I am trying to get into my computer after a long absence. I loaded the software from a disk. It is the only program on the computer. Thanks in advance for your help.

8.04 has reached the end of its life. You would be better to save anything worth saving (?) using a LiveCD and then doing a new install ---14.04 LTS?

I thought so too, but was trying to view the files to see if I did need to save anything. Can't get in. I had written down my password, but not my username.

You should be able to find out your username with the procedure in http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

ls /home

should list all user names that have been defined on that system.
