How do I remove scim from default setup?

Asked by Vytas

With latest hardy updates, I see scim running by default and its icon visible in the notification area. However, I do not need scim. In the session properties I see no option related to scim that I could uncheck. So what is the best, "official" way to remove scim from default Gnome session setup?

Also, I can see this scim GUI probably can compete for the worst user interface ever created with GTK+, is it going to be presented by default for all users?

Taken from http://weblog.verwilst.be/2008/03/11/scim-in-ubuntu-hardy/ :

<quote>
Type this in your console: “sudo update-alternatives –set xinput-all_ALL /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default” .

Restarting X should show you a scim-less systray!

I tried typing that command into my shell, but got the error:

update-alternatives: unknown argument `–set'

Are there any other ways to stop SCIM starting when I log on? I end up typing gibberish Chinese otherwise!

Hi, Michael!

You should not type the long dash (–) character, but try to type -- (two hyphens) followed by "set" instead.

Hope this helps :)

Thank you Артём!

In the end, I have uninstalled SCIM - I had thought it would uninstall lots of other packages as well but that was complete rubbish. But your method owuld obviously have worked.

Moral of this story, amateurs like me ought to stay away from newer releases!
