slow shutdown & startup xubuntu 14.04.2

shutdown is slow > 50 seconds
system reports
nscd shutdown [ok]
then there is a long delay
octopussy then stops

on startup there is a long delay >50 seconds

I've tried kernel parameters
verbose debug rootdelay=10 loglevel=5
to find any clues,
no luck so far

any ideas?
