Desktop Not Displaying Correctly

Asked by Chandler

Hi, I just recently bought a MacBook Pro, and I want to install Ubuntu 14.04 on it. I was able to install Linux alongside Mac OS successfully, but only after a problem. When Ubuntu 14.04 loaded up from the USB drive using rEFInd and all the text from the drop down menus, and the icons in all programs were completely invisible. Unity loaded up completely fine it seems, but if I were to go into the connections tab, all the options would be blank. If I went into system settings, all the icons would be invisible until I moved my cursor over them (until I moved it back over to them), but most importantly, all the contents in the installation window were completely blank, rendering everything unusable. I was able to fix this by modifying Linux kernel boot options in Enterprise and enabling nomodeset. After which Ubuntu installed successfully, however, as I went to load up Ubuntu, it booted to a blank screen (Ubuntu was running as I heard a notification and could go to tty1,2,3 and so on. I turned off my computer and attempted to try again tomorrow, this time Ubuntu booted up successfully but I was greeted to just the default wallpaper, I entered in my password and hit enter and the same issue occurred with the blank icons and text. I have tried enabling nomodeset through GRUB but have been unsuccessful as it just booted up with a blank screen. I have looked all over the internet and have found no one with a similar problem, some help would be much appreciated.
My system Specs are:
Display: 2560 x 1600 Retina Display
Intel Core i5 2.7 GHz processor
Memory 8 GB DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

Drop to TTY1 and run full updates. You may need to use a wired Internet connection

Ok, so I used a wired connection and used the sudo apt-get update command on TTY1, restarted the computer twice, however I am still having the same problems.

Hi, still don't you fix the problem?
Actually, I'm in the same situaltion but my PC is vaioz vjz13a1(CPU: intel core i7-5557U, Graphics: intel Iris Graphics 6100)
I'm new in ubuntu so I'm not familiar with it but I just think the problem is related to intel Iris Graphics 6100
Anyway, I also need your help

Hey, I managed to find a solution for this problem, first I booted up into GRUB, (hold left shift after you turn the device on) went into advanced and selected Ubuntu recovery mode (second one down for me). Once it loaded up I hit resume and was able to access my desktop properly. I then went into the terminal (Ctrl +Alt + T) and entered exactly without quotations: "gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub". I navigated to the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" and modified it to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset". I then saved the file and exited gedit, I then entered another command without quotations: "sudo update-grub". I restarted my system and it worked. (source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132) I however now have problems connecting wirelessly to a network (no connection devices show up). In any event, I hope this fixes your problem as well.
