When you unplug the device, do you use the safe remove feature in the OS before unplugging it or do you just pull it out?
Does it work in order OSes?

There appears to be an 8Gb /dev/sdb which has no partition. You can use fdisk to make a partition on the storage then format it as you desire. It will then be usable.
