Screen flicker on new installation of 14.04

Asked by Andrew Crisp

I have just installed 14.04 64 bit on an HP G60 with 3GB RAM and a 1TB hybrid drive. I am trying to change from a Windows 7 machine as I am fed up with the constant lock-ups on Windows 7. The HDD is new strait out of the box and I am using the latest downloaded ISO from a CD. The installation completes without incident.

On re-boot, the desktop is steady, but as soon as I try to access any application (Firefox, settings etc.) the display starts to flash and change colour. Close the application and the flickering stops.

As a new Ubuntu user, and suggestions would be gratefully received.

Seems that it has an Nvidia GPU. Is this correct?

If so then use the additional drivers application under system settings and reboot.

Changed this to the Nvidia proprietry tested driver. The problem is now worse with the only way to get away from the flickering is to hold down the power button. In addition, applications which were working, like Firefox, now will not start making the machine completely useless.

Perhaps a complete re-installation is needed?

Could try:

sudo nvidi-xconfig

Then reboot

Will try that tomorrow - tried nvidi-xconfig and it was not recognised so turned system off for now.

Made no difference so had to give up and return to Windows 7 which does not have these hardware problems.

Can you help with this problem?
