Re-install Ubuntu 14.04 Alongside Windows 7

Asked by Kevin Laird

I am new to Linux/Ubuntu. I want to move away from Windows and onto Linux.
I was doing an install alongside Windows 7.
There was a power outage during the installation.
When power returned I tried to run the installation again.
I no longer get the option to install alongside Windows.
I followed the numerous threads here for removing Ubuntu from a Win 7 machine.
I have done a repair of the MBR and there are no partitions allocated for Ubuntu.
How do I get the option to run a an install next to Win 7 again or how can I install next to Win 7.
Keeping in mind I am a complete noob to linux.

Does Windows boot ok?
Did you run a chkdsk and a defrag on the Windows partition to check health?

What does diskmanagement in windows show? Is there unallocated space, or are there extra partitions etc.?

I am running chkdsk now and will defragment when that completes.
Disk Management and Easeus does not show any unallocated space or extra partitions.

Chkdsk and defragmenter completed with no issues reported. I booted to the LiveCD after this and still had the same problem. The only options I have for install are:
1. Erase entire disk and install Ubuntu.
2. Encrypt the new Ubuntu installation for security.
3. Use LVM with the new Ubuntu installation.
4. Something else.

"Something else" should allow you to manually shrink the Windows partition(s) to create free space for additional partitions where you can then install Ubuntu.

Keeping in mind I am a complete noob to Linux, what would be the detailed steps in doing so?

Not sure you did, just in case have a look there :

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

You would need gparted to partition your hard disk. I can't remember whether gparted is in the Live CD/USB or not. Just in case it is not, you may want to have the GParted Live from here :

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

Can you help with this problem?
