recovery mode fsck stalling

Asked by Galen Thurber

happens on many x64 kernels
3.2.0-77-generic
3.2.0-76-generic
3.2.0-75-generic
3.2.0-72-generic

booting to recovery mode then using fsck
fsck will run on fstab partitions
then stall and not return to the recovery menu

RAM has been tested and passed
hard has been tested and passed (even booted to a live linux and gparted reports no errors)

what happens after fsck that is stalling ?

Boot to live CD and fsck from there

It seems that you are booting from the same disk partition that you then want to run fsck on. Running fsck on a mounted partition is not recommended.
You should boot from another medium (e.g. a install DVD or USB stick) to run fsck on the partitions of your main hard disk.

recovery mode starts the system in ro mode
then when any recovery tools are needed it is switched to rw
and fsck is done.
fsck is part of the recovery check

To make sure that I am not misunderstanding:

What exactly are you doing?
What commands do you issue, and what is happening then?
What "recovery tools" / "recovery check" are you talking about?
