Multiple problems after release upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10

It's just taken me two hours to get a GUI back up after Unity dash wouldn't start after an upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10.

I've now switched to Gnome desktop as the drivers are just all over the place!!

Why would proprietry drivers be selected as default in the new release when I was previously using open source??

Now my USB headset is no working I/O - sound always comes out of the speakers.

Now for my real question, why was 14.10 EVER released??
